Witness the Effortless Cool and Versatility of the Saxophone Quartet
Musica Viva Australia will see out 2022 in high style and abundant, infectious energy as the Signum Saxophone Quartet make its highly anticipated Australian debut.
This vibrant ensemble from Cologne have amassed a significant following since its founding in 2006, blazing a trail for itself through the rarity of its make up, the ingenuity and eclecticism of the music it performs, and the magnetism of its musicians.
Highly virtuosic players, the Signums are capable of producing sounds so intimate that you’d swear just one instrument was being played, and so lush that they replicate the bodily thrill of a large-scale orchestra at full pelt. At the heart of their playing is a keen musical intelligence, conveying the essence of a work through surprising, infinitely complex sounds.
For their Australian debut, the Signums will perform a selection of their signature works. The wit and grace of Bach’s Italian Concerto meets the exhilarating rough and tumble of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, while the sly, effortless cool of Gershwin’s Three Preludes is offset by the propulsive swing of Camilo’s Caribe.
Joining the Signums is violinist and local favourite Kristian Winther, who shares the ensemble’s thirst for the new and unusual. Together they’ll tackle the Weill Violin Concerto, a notoriously elusive, fascinating work arranged for the musicians by Sydney composer Jessica Wells. Moodily glamorous, droll, and with an unmistakable jazz flavour, it’s the perfect showcase for the assembled players.
Don’t miss the Signum Saxophone Quartet and Kristian Winther in concert at Newcastle City Hall, on Tuesday 8 November, 7:30pm.
