Upgrade at Cooks Square Park Now Underway
Work at Cooks Square Park in East Maitland is officially underway this week, with the sportsground’s training area set to receive a major facelift.
Maitland City Council has secured federal funding to upgrade the current training pitch into a full sized field, enabling junior development league games to be played on the new surface and providing an additional training area which will reduce wear and tear on the main field.
Mayor Philip Penfold said this will be ‘a major shot in the arm for local sporting groups, including Maitland FC who call Cooks Square Park home.'
‘Upgrades like this will ensure we have top grade sporting facilities right across our City, giving clubs like the Magpies a place to play, train and grow for the future,’ Mayor Penfold said.
‘Maitland is the fastest growing region in NSW, and we want to make sure we have the recreational facilities and infrastructure to keep pace with that growth.’
Earthworks will take place over the next few months, with stormwater infrastructure, new perimeter fencing, and floodlight installation set to follow.
Council’s Group Manager Infrastructure and Works David Moloney said crews will be on site ‘from this week to begin major earthworks and drainage works.’
‘Weather permitting, we’re hoping to lay turf down prior to Christmas before we irrigate the playing surface and install LED floodlights next year,’ Mr Moloney said.
‘We’re proud to be delivering improvements to Cooks Square Park which is a much loved recreational facility in Maitland, and we know these upgrades will enhance the experience for user groups across our community.’
We’ll continue to work with the Federal Government on funding to finalise the upgrades for the site.
Work is expected to wrap up in April.
