Unlocking more housing supply in Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie’s booming south-west is poised for more housing supply after councillors backed plans to rezone 4.5 hectares of land at 1377 Hue Hue Road, Wyee for residential development at tonight’s Council meeting.

The plan would allow for about 50 new homes to be constructed close to services, shops and transport.

Council also endorsed entering into a planning agreement with landowner Wyee Nominees and developer TOPA Property to facilitate the development, including measures to preserve an environmental conservation zone at Mannering Creek with a realigned border.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said Council was eager to get runs on the board when it came to housing supply in key growth areas.

“The population of Lake Macquarie’s south-west is expected to almost double over the next two decades, and we need to ensure housing and infrastructure keep up with demand,” he said.

“Targeting appropriate sites for development in locations close to existing services and transport links is key to facilitating prosperous and sustainable growth.”

An amendment to the Wyee West Precinct Area Plan will also be required to allow for delivery of future infrastructure and development.

In other agenda items, Council recommended donations of $2000 to NSW Justices Association, the Fathering Project, Toronto Multi-Purpose Centre, Healing Path to Wellness, Friends with Dignity and Many Nations United Newcastle, for approval at the next Council Meeting.

Council also recommended placing its draft flood study for Morans Creek, Stockton Creek, Mullards Creek, Clacks Creek, Melaleuca Creek and Dora Creek on public exhibition.

The study seeks to improve understanding of flood impacts and risk in the area, and trickles down to inform the Morisset Place Strategy.

Council’s draft North Creek Flood Study, covering the North Creek catchment in Warners Bay, was also recommended for public exhibition.

The full agenda and reports are available at meeting agendas and minutes.
