Tantrum Youth Arts selected alongside Australia’s leading arts organisations to create employment pathways for artists with disability
Newcastle-based professional arts organisation Tantrum Youth Arts is creating vital employment pathways for artists with disability, selected as a 2024 host organisation for Create NSW’s Createability Internship program.
This is the first time a Createability internship has been offered in the Hunter, with Tantrum included in the program alongside organisations like Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir, Legs on the Wall and the ABC.
Tantrum is offering a paid internship in producing for an artist or arts worker with disability or who is d/Deaf, specifically in supporting the development and presentation of a unique live event with Tantrum's Accelerate Ensemble - a performance training ground for artists with disability.
Over the past seven years, Tantrum has supported over 60 early-career artists and arts workers to launch their creative careers through training, mentorships, internships and residencies.
Participation in the Createability program aligns with one of Tantrum’s core purposes – to provide a vital pathway for early-career artists and arts workers in the region to build professional arts careers.
“This is a really exciting opportunity for Tantrum. I feel so pleased that an arts organisation in the Hunter has been selected. There are limited opportunities in the area for people wanting to kickstart professional careers in arts management or producing, and even fewer opportunities for people who live with disability,” Creative Director Penelope Kentish said.
“At Tantrum we’re looking forward to extending our work with early career artists in this way. We currently support early career artists with disability in performance training, and with the Createability internship we will be able to support someone in the producing space as well.”
Applications can be made through Create NSW and close at 5.00 pm on 11 March 2024.
