Take your tastebuds around the globe at Wallsend!
With over 50 local business members, the Wallsend Town Business Association is committed to promoting, beautifying and developing the precinct's local economy. And one of the most vibrant and multi-cultural offerings that Wallsend enjoys is that of the more than 23 different food outlets, restaurants and cafés that are to be found there.
With everything from Italian, pub grub, noodle houses, Chinese, dumplings, kebabs, Japanese and club bistros and restaurants, Wayne Rogers, Chairperson of the Business Association, believes it's the place to be.
"Wallsend is a one-stop eatery!" said Wayne. "There is so much variety on offer. It doesn't matter whether it's day or night; there's something for everyone to enjoy. It's the perfect place to shop, eat and stay."
There is a strong community village vibe to Wallsend that many business owners mention when asked about why they run their businesses in the town. Chef at Café Tempest, Rhys Walter, who has been in business in Wallsend for ten years, credits the connected community with how they've managed to survive Covid.
"We've got a motto that we live by at Café Tempest," said Rhys. "Enter a stranger and leave as a friend. My mum Julie runs the business, and she knows everyone. The community rallies around and helps each other out whenever it's needed. Our homestyle cooking is popular – especially the rissoles. The recipe came from my grandmother's cookbook, and all the locals know it."
Winnie Ng, owner and operator of Heng Loong Restaurant, agrees that the community is what makes the place so special. A leader in the local restaurant scene, Winnie and her husband, who both hail from Hong Kong, have been in business in Wallsend for 30 years and have seen the area's growth firsthand.
"We've seen the area grow to include Maryland and Fletcher and watched as the businesses in the main street diversify. We've survived Covid because we have 30 years of loyal customers who support us, and we're very grateful for that," said Winnie.
"We're also very proud to have been able to give something back to the community through the conversion of the old Wallsend Library into our restaurant space for Heng Loong."
