Surf and nerf on the menu for Youth Week

Colour runs, a mini festival, nerf wars and surf lessons are just some of the exciting activities planned for Youth Week in Lake Mac.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the week, which runs from Wednesday 9 to Thursday 17 April, was about celebrating young people.
“This year’s theme is about celebrating the unique strengths of every young person and recognising their individual and collective power as influencers, leaders and decision-makers,” he said.
“It’s crucial that we make the most of these events which empower the young people of Lake Macquarie – they represent the future of our city and have a lot to offer.”
Lake Macquarie City Council Coordinator Social and Community Planning Jessica Salvador said seven Youth Week activities would be held across Lake Macquarie.
“We’re excited to see Giant Games on the Grass go ahead at 12:30pm Wednesday 9 April for the students at Toronto High School,” she said.
“Then Friday 11 April is jam-packed with art workshops at the Museum of Art and Culture, yapang from 10am and a Colour Run at PCYC Lake Macquarie in Windale from 4pm.”
Indiana Richardson, aged 17, said it would be great to see this event go ahead at Caves Beach from 10am Saturday 12 April, inviting young people to take part in surf lessons, before enjoying a barbecue and some beach volleyball and cricket.
“It’s important to learn swim safety in a fun environment because it gets rid of the stereotype that water safety isn’t cool,” she said.
“Young people should get involved in these kinds of activities because it gets kids out of their school groups and they’re able to hang out with different people from Lake Macquarie and connect.”
A water fun day and colour run event will go ahead at Baxter Field in Marks Point on Monday 14 April.
The Ultimate Nerf War will fire up from 10am at Bonnells Bay Youth & Community Centre Reserve Area on Wednesday 16 April.
Finally, a Barbecue and Beats event is set to sizzle at PCYC Morisset from 5pm on Friday 18 April.
