Speers Point Public School spearheads Book Week for the community
The Speers Point community, led by Speers Point Public School, will turn out in style for possibly the longest public Book Week parade in the Hunter next Thursday [August 22].
More than 250 students, more than 30 staff and an as-yet unknown number of community members will dress up as their favourite book characters under the theme ‘Reading is Magic’ before parading more than two kilometres up and down Main Road Speers Point.
Principal Chris Payne says the school is building a wonderful tradition of community involvement.
“En route we connect with local businesses and the wider community such as the Speers Point library, Lake Macquarie Council and Great Beginnings Preschool,” he said.
“The number of community members either joining in or cheering us on has been growing every year.
“It’s the most marvellous way of sharing and promoting a love of reading, which is a bullseye on our target of improving literacy for everyone.
“The trouble families and individuals go to in making costumes is wonderful, and I can’t wait to see this year’s offerings.”
The school will have a book fair open at the start and end of each school day from Monday to Wednesday next week, before the mighty parade on Thursday.
The parade kicks off from the school at 9.30 and finishes about an hour later, before a community lunch and cakestall at 11am back at the school.
