Sophie’s choice makes the world a better place
Leukaemia survivor Sophie Berude knows what it’s like to spend days and weeks on end in a hospital bed.
Those memories fuel the Year 8 student’s passion for helping other kids navigating cancer treatment – an endeavour that has so far seen her raise more than $40,000 singlehandedly.
Sophie, 14, doesn’t do it for reward or adulation, but both are certainly fitting for such a selfless young achiever.
Earlier this year she was recognised as ‘one to watch’ in the NSW Women of the Year Awards for her work with national charity Redkite and the John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
And more recently, she was named the Lake Mac Young Citizen of the Year at the 2024 Lake Mac Awards.
“The award means so much because I’ve been in the hospital a lot myself, and I know how hard it can be,” Sophie said.
“That’s why I’m passionate about bringing joy to kids who are going through something similar. It’s amazing to think that what I’m doing with Redkite and the Joy campaigns for The John Hunter Hospital is helping to make their days a little brighter.”
Nominations are now open for the 2025 Lake Mac Awards, and Sophie encouraged people to get involved.
“Nominating yourself or someone you know is a great way to celebrate the positive impact you’re having on others,” she said.
“Even small acts of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially when they’re going through something difficult like being in hospital.”
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the awards shone a light on people and organisations working tirelessly for the community.
“It’s humbling to read the list of finalists each year and see all they have done and continue to do for Lake Mac and its residents,” he said.
“These wonderful humans don’t do it for the recognition, but the Lake Mac Awards are an opportunity for us to show that we see them, and we are grateful.”
Nominations are open until 17 November across 13 categories, including arts and creativity, diversity and inclusion, volunteering, community contribution, environmental enhancement, sports and events.
Among the most coveted are the Young Citizen of the Year and the city’s highest annual honour – the Lake Mac Ambassador award.
Top Gun pilot Matt Hall was named this year’s Lake Mac Ambassador for his efforts showcasing the city to a global audience, and for his philanthropy.
