Hi Mark, Can you please introduce yourself, your practice, your qualifications and areas of speciality?

There’s a lot in that question! I own and operate Newcastle City Dental in Newcastle, and have been a dentist for 15 years; dentistry was what I wanted to do from a very young age. I grew up in both Sydney and Newcastle – my first degree was in Neuroscience, followed by Dentistry – both completed at Sydney University. Since graduating, I’ve worked in both general and specialist practices throughout Newcastle and Sydney. I returned to the University of Sydney in 2012 to complete a Graduate Diploma of Clinical Dentistry in Children’s Dentistry, whilst working as a Registrar at the Sydney Dental Hospital and the Children’s Hospital Westmead. I’ve held clinical roles as a tutor at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health in Paediatric Dentistry and as a researcher into Obstructive Sleep Apnoea at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. I continue to attend both local and international courses and conferences to enable me to provide the latest techniques and treatments to each patient.

Tell us about Newcastle City Dental – what is your mission, what services do you offer, and where are you located?

We pride ourselves on offering patients a warm, family-oriented environment using the most appropriate and sophisticated treatments. When visiting us, you will enjoy superior yet caring and supportive dental care. Our mission is to provide personalised dental treatment for every patient, emphasising comfort and optimal health outcomes. We believe that only once a patient has good oral health, can ideal and long-lasting cosmetic treatment be achieved.

We offer a full range of dental services including veneers and crowns, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery and advanced dental services like TMJ and bruxism, snoring, sleep apnoea, sedation and sleep dentistry. Our full range of services can be found on our website – www.newcastlecitydental.com.au

We are located at 1/9 Watt St in the heart of the CBD – opposite the old Newcastle train station and next door to the Great Northern Hotel. It’s a really convenient location with plenty of street parking and easy access to both trams and buses.

Tell us a little about the team – who is involved in each area of the practice, what is their role and how long has each person been there? Kathryn Mcguinness is a dental assistant and coordinates and works within the surgery and sterilisation. Kathryn has been here for two years and has over 30 years of experience in general and specialist dental practices. Angela Herbert is our receptionist and dental assistant. Angela coordinates the reception and also works within the surgery and sterilisation. Angela has been here for a year and has over 25 years of experience in general and specialist dental practices.

What motivated you to open your own clinic, and what keeps you turning up every day? What do you like most about dentistry? That’s easy – our patients. We have the most wonderful patients, and our motivation each day is to provide them with the best, most comfortable and accessible dental care possible, for them and their families.

Being an independent small business, we are able to run a practice that caters for each individual patient. We can provide custom health and treatments plans without hindrance. I enjoy seeing patients happy and comfortable with their oral health, long term. I enjoy seeing them return and seeing the children, the next generation, grow up with ideal oral health.

Do you see any key trends in your industry that you are working towards? Do you have a vision moving forward? Over the last decade, digital dentistry has progressed in leaps and bounds. We blend the latest equipment and technology with other treatments that have been scientifically tried and tested for a long time. Another positive dental trend, that we have been practising since opening, is customising both treatments and preventative regimes to provide optimal lifelong health for each patient. As Australians are living longer than ever, their dentition needs to last longer too.

Moving forward, we are excited to grow our practice continuing to update our staff through education and our facilities, to provide the best dental services well into the future.
