A photography competition for Hunter high school students has launched as part of a campaign celebrating the region’s role in Australia’s net zero transformation.

Students are invited to submit images showing what the energy transformation means to them, with the winning photograph to be included in a new exhibition showcasing the people, projects and places powering Australia’s future.

The competition and exhibition are part of the Bringing new energy to Australia campaign, a new education and information initiative from the Australian Government’s Net Zero Economy Agency.

Activities in the region will run until the end of November and include an interactive information hub at Charlestown Square shopping centre as well as mobile hubs at events like the Hunter Innovation Festival and Career Links’ Mini EV Challenge.

“The Hunter region has always played a key role in powering the nation,” said Net Zero Economy Agency’s acting CEO, Trevor Power.

“Although this transition comes with its challenges, it also brings new opportunities. The region is home to essential industrial infrastructure and skilled workers, so is primed to seize the benefits of the net zero economy. Our Bringing new energy to Australia campaign proudly celebrates the Hunter’s unique position, and we’re excited to see what this means to the future generation through our competition.”

John Purcell, CEO of Career Links said: “Australia’s energy transformation is underway, impacting communities and landscapes across the country. As an organisation set up to support the transition from school to career, we understand the key role the Hunter is playing in this critical shift. The photography competition will offer high school students the chance to reflect on what this transformation means to them and how they could shape their own future and that of our region.”

Research by KPMG has shown that the development of a new regional economy based on renewable energy and other industries could lead to up to 10,000 new jobs in the Hunter by 2030[1], with the potential to generate up to $10 billion in new revenue from renewable energy by 2050[2].

The Net Zero Economy Agency is responsible for promoting orderly and positive economic transformation to ensure Australia, its regions and workers realise and share the benefits of a net zero economy.
