A contemplative person with gray hair wears a brown fur coat, resting their head on one hand. Soft-focus natural background.

A message from the director of Newcastle Writers Festival.

The week before the festival is an exciting time as we prepare to welcome guest writers, session hosts, sponsors, industry representatives, and you, our loyal audience. We have writers arriving from Singapore and across Australia, including Perth. Indulge me as I take this opportunity to share some of my program picks, which include well-known writers and emerging talent, and a mix of free and ticketed events.

See you next weekend for a celebration of books and ideas. Travel safe. Rosemarie Milsom.

Rosemarie became hooked on the US series Alone during the 2020 lockdown. She couldn’t get enough of the hardcore wilderness competition. Gina Chick was the winner of our inaugural home-grown series, but she is so much more. A natural and courageous storyteller – after all she is the granddaughter of Charmian Clift – Gina is the perfect guest to launch the 2025 festival. Host Benjamin Law will literally roll a die on stage to settle on the themes of their conversation.

Each week in Good Weekend magazine, Benjamin Law asks public figures to discuss the subjects we’re told to keep private by getting them to roll a die. The numbers they land on are the topics they’re given: money, sex, death, religion, bodies, or politics.

Join us for a special live edition of Dicey Topics with Gina Chick, the inaugural winner of Alone Australia, whose best-selling memoir We Are The Stars tells a ‘misfit’s story’ of love, connection, and letting go.

MC Dan Cox. Proudly supported by Good Weekend magazine.
