Local Youth Celebrate Creativity and Connection Through Made @ The Place Program
The Made @ The Place program at The Place Charlestown Community Centre, has proven to be a transformative initiative for local youth, providing a vibrant platform for self-expression, skill development, and meaningful connections.
Over the past two years, this innovative program has offered eight distinct four-week creative workshops, inspiring and empowering young people to explore their artistic potential in an inclusive and supportive environment.
Designed to inspire, connect, and empower, Made @ The Place has helped participants enhance their artistic skills, develop self-confidence, and foster a sense of belonging. Through the program, young people have forged new friendships, discovered their creative voices, and even explored turning their artistic creations into marketable products.
On December 5, 2024, the community came together to celebrate the remarkable achievements of these talented young artists with a special exhibition showcasing their work. Over 75 participants, family members, and community members attended the event, which offered an opportunity to view the participants' creations displayed in a professional gallery setting for the first time.
The exhibition was a proud and emotional moment for many, as participants saw their work framed and celebrated. Families expressed joy and admiration, and the young artists were thrilled to reconnect with peers, facilitators, and mentors. The event provided an enriching space for thoughtful conversations about their artistic journeys and practical advice on how to further develop their skills.
Cristelle Govender, Centre Manager said, “The impact of Made @ The Place extends far beyond the gallery walls. Participants have reported increased confidence, a stronger sense of identity, and a greater appreciation for their creative abilities”. The program has also been a catalyst for forming lasting friendships and networks, empowering youth to express themselves positively while contributing to a vibrant and supportive community.
Feedback from attendees underscored the success of the program, with many expressing deep gratitude and enthusiasm for its continuation. As both staff and participants reflected on the journey, the event left everyone feeling inspired and optimistic for the future of arts and creativity in the community.
We thank the NSW Government for their support in making the program possible for local youth.
