More than 180 cruise ship passengers and their guides from Europe are set to explore the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary on 26 February.

The passengers aboard the MS AMADEA will visit the sanctuary as part of a half-day excursion to Port Stephens.

Director of Community Futures Steve Peart said the sanctuary is proving to be a significant drawcard for international visitors.

“It’s a testament to the Sanctuary’s reputation as a ‘must-see’ top attraction in the area, and a wonderful opportunity for these visitors to experience the magic of our koalas,” Mr Peart said.

The Sanctuary are preparing for almost one-third of the passengers aboard the MS AMADEA’s 128-day world cruise who will visit the sanctuary and koala hospital, before heading to Nelson Bay.

Holiday Park Section Manager Kim Latham said the visit demonstrates the success of their partnership with the cruise industry.

“It’s a key part of our marketing strategy, and we’re seeing real results with increased visitation and a positive economic impact on Port Stephens,” Ms Latham said.

“Given that about 20% of our international day visitors come from Germany, we’re confident the MS AMADEA passengers will enjoy their stop at the sanctuary,” she added.

The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary is a partnership between Port Stephens Council, the NSW Government and a local volunteer care group known as Port Stephens Koala Hospital. The Sanctuary’s focus is on conservation and protecting the threatened species for future generations to enjoy witnessing koala in the wild.
