Maitland City Council has lit up the iconic Morpeth Bridge with dramatic architectural lighting to commemorate 200 years of the historic township.

The lights are on every night just before sunset for everyone to enjoy, then turned off at 10.30pm.

Council's Coordinator City & Visitor Economy Portia Wendt says, 'the Morpeth community have told us they wanted the much celebrated bridge lit up so it can be enjoyed as a centrepiece of the township when the sun goes down. We're thrilled to bring this project to life.'

The bridge is lit with a single colour that is changed after a period and for special occasions.

The bridge lighting is one of three infrastructure projects Council is undertaking to commemorate the milestone.

Nearly completed is a shared path on Steamer Street that will be open to the public in the coming weeks. A riverside shared path from Robert Street to Illalaung Park is also in the final stages of design and will be the first stage of what will ultimately be the Morpeth to Walka Water Works shared pathway.

Both of these paths will include enhancements such as public art, interpretations and seating in the future.

The official commemorations and program of activities for the Morpeth Bicentenary was delayed due to COVID restrictions and will now be held next year when it's possible to invite the whole community to get together safely.
