Lake Mac Libraries is hosting a series of digital literacy sessions as part of the Be Connected program for older citizens interested in gaining new skills.

Mature Aged Services Officer Fiona Watson said the program paired local volunteers with participants to teach various topics, from how to identify online scams to creating social media accounts.

Ms Watson said the program was an opportunity for different community members to collaborate in a fulfilling way for both participants and volunteers.

“This past year has taught us how important it is to stay connected virtually,” Ms Watson said.

“If we can help teach people how to video-call a grandchild or join a social group on Facebook, we are helping with enrichment and preventing social isolation. It can feel daunting trying to navigate the online world, but this program can help make it a little easier.”

The initiative takes place at libraries across Lake Macquarie, with sessions currently available at Toronto, Charlestown, Morisset and Swansea.

Once a participant has booked in, a volunteer will tailor the lesson to fit participants’ experience level and interests.

“Each volunteer has been given digital mentor training, as well as site-specific inductions,” Ms Watson said.

Program participant Carol McMurray said the digital literary sessions had helped her understand the technology and how to use it.

“I’m really enjoying the program so far. I’ve learnt how to send photos, search for information on the internet and print,” said Ms McMurray.

For all participants' safety and well-being, social-distancing and social gathering measures will be practised, and contact details will be kept for traceability. For more information or to register for a session, call 4921 0400 go to library.lakemac.com.au
