FLiCKERFEST 2025 - 34th International Short Film Festival Tour

‘Strictly The Best Short Films’
Flickerfest is thrilled to return to Newcastle in 2025, bringing an unforgettable evening of world-class short films to the Civic Playhouse Theatre on Saturday, 12th April, at 6:30pm. For one night only, enjoy two incredible programs, showcasing the very best in short filmmaking from Australia and around the world.
As Australia’s leading short film festival, Flickerfest continues to champion outstanding storytelling and creative vision, celebrating both emerging and established filmmakers. This year’s program has been carefully curated by festival director, Newcastle born and raised Bronwyn Kidd, from an exceptional selection of 3,500 entries submitted to Flickerfest’s Academy Award® and BAFTA-Qualifying festival.
Newcastle audiences will have the chance to experience a handpicked lineup of the Best of Australian Shorts and Short Laughs Comedy, featuring bold, thought-provoking, and laugh-out-loud stories from across the globe, brought to life on the big screen.

Saturday 12th April, 6:30pm, The Best Of Australian Shorts programme shines a spotlight on the richness and diversity of Australian storytelling. Among this year’s standouts fresh from Flickerfest is Pending Pick Up, a playful adventure into the world of thrifting on Facebook Marketplace, by Newcastle local Andy Gallagher. Growing up on a few acres in Medowie before attending Lambton High, Gallagher’s journey through filmmaking and commercial work led him to collaborations within Newcastle’s vibrant theatre scene including actors Matt Lee and Charlotte De Wit, who star in this film. Now based in Eleebana with his family Andy brings a uniquely local perspective to this year’s program.
Further highlights include Marcia and The Shark, winner of the Panasonic Award for Best Australian Short Film, starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey (I Am Woman, Hotel Mumbai) in a captivating and beautifully crafted story. The Dog, starring Kate Walshe (Grey’s Anatomy), delivers a powerful and moving performance and laugh-out- loud at the delicious black Australian comedy Candy Bar from director Nash Edgerton (Mr In Between), written by and starring award winning actor Damon Herriman (Breaking Bad).

Saturday 12th April, 9pm, The Short Laughs Comedy programme brings a delightful mix of offbeat Flickerfest shorts from Australia and around the world, guaranteed to entertain and uplift. Highlights include the Dutch film Nelson the Piglet, about a family whose miniature pig becomes the talk of the town, winner of the Jury Prize for Best Short Documentary at Flickerfest 2025, and the highly humorous Irish Film The Head On Him about a biracial boys move to small town Ireland & his attempts to tame his afro to fit in, only to find it growing back bigger than ever.
Don’t miss this special one-night-only event, where you’ll discover some of the freshest and most exciting voices from Australia and around the world..
