Ben Maddox and Fiona Rowan from Maitland City Council's Environment team, preparing for this year's Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is back for 2023 from 16 to 22 October.

The annual event invites residents to embrace their inner citizen scientists by observing and recording the birds that live in their local environment.

Maitland City Council Manager Environment and Sustainability Catherine Pepper says it is easy for all nature enthusiasts to participate.

'All you need is 20 minutes and access to the Aussie Bird Count app or their website to get involved in the count.

'Participants do not need to be professional birdwatchers to enjoy this activity. The app is freely available and will help you identify local birds based on size, colour and location.’

Maitland's library branches are helping residents to participate by making birdwatching kits available for loan. Each kit contains binoculars and identification guides to assist in birdwatching activities.

In 2022, 409 observers participated in the bird count across Maitland, with 144 different bird species recorded by Maitland participants. The most common bird species observed were Rainbow Lorikeet, Spotted Dove, Noisy Miner, Australian Magpie, Common Myna and Galah.

Ms Pepper says your 'participation in the bird count is not limited to your backyard, though it is a great place to start.

'If you are looking for somewhere different to undertake birdwatching activities, we encourage everyone to visit any of our reserves, parks, and waterways, which all provide great bird watching opportunities.'
