Growing older should be fun! To help inspire you, there is an exciting selection of events happening this month, ranging from chair yoga to propagating plants, which aim to celebrate Lake Mac’s over-55s as part of this year’s NSW Seniors Festival.

While NSW Seniors Festival – the largest celebration of seniors in the southern hemisphere – officially runs from 13–24 April this year, Council is hosting its Let’s Celebrate Seniors program for the entire month of April.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships Andrew Bryant said seniors were encouraged to participate in the Seniors Festival program.

“We want to celebrate our over-55s community, so we are encouraging people to get out and enjoy new experiences, continue learning, stay active and connect to their communities,” Mr Bryant said.

“Our older generations contribute so much to the community, but we need to ensure they remain engaged and enriched, particularly while the effects of COVID-19 are still felt."

Activities on offer include a gardening workshop at Speers Point Park, dance mobility classes at Rathmines Theatre, a birdwatching walk through Belmont Wetlands and a talk at Swansea Centre by reptile expert Teresa Purnell designed to reduce fear and increase awareness of snakes in our environment.

Ageing and Disability Officer Peta McGrath said the event showcased the services and resources available for seniors in Lake Macquarie.

“There’s something exciting on offer for everyone this month in a COVIDsafe environment,” Ms McGrath said.

“We also have free tickets to selected Let’s Celebrate Seniors in Lake Mac events which are up for grabs for those who sign up to our monthly Over 55s program.”
