Cape Town's Liquid Gold A Journey Through South Africa's Premier Wine Regions

As readers of the August issue pointed out, a trip to Cape Town is incomplete without venturing into the surrounding wine regions!

 

In fact, the majority of my time in Cape Town has been spent wining and dining my way through the Cape Winelands (okay – mostly wining) - so welcome to Cape Town Part II – Wine Country!


Famed for producing some of the world's finest wines. South African vintners have mastered the art of winemaking, with a particular flair for Chenin Blanc and Pinotage; these regions offer not only exquisite wines but also breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and culinary delights that will captivate even the most discerning traveller.



Constantia: A Taste of History

For those pressed for time, a visit to Constantia, the closest wine region to Cape Town, is an absolute must. At the heart of this area lies Groot Constantia, South Africa's oldest wine estate, established in 1685. This historic property offers visitors a glimpse into the country's winemaking heritage while serving up world-class wines.


Groot Constantia's history is as rich as its wines. Founded by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape, the estate quickly gained fame for its sweet wines, particularly the Constantia Wyn. This dessert wine became a favourite among European nobility, including Napoleon Bonaparte, who reportedly requested it on his deathbed.


Today, visitors to Groot Constantia can explore the Cape Dutch manor house, which houses a cultural history museum. The estate offers cellar tours where guests can learn about the winemaking process and, of course, indulge in wine tastings. Don't miss the opportunity to try their award-winning Gouverneurs Reserve Red, a bold Bordeaux-style blend.


The estate also boasts two excellent restaurants: Jonkershuis and Simon's. Both offer superb cuisine that pairs perfectly with Groot Constantia's wines, allowing visitors to savour the flavours of the Cape in a truly historic setting.



Durbanville: Cool=Climate Gems

Just 20 minutes north of Cape Town lies Durbanville, a cool-climate wine region known for its crisp white wines and elegant reds. The area's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean creates ideal conditions for slow ripening, resulting in

wines of exceptional balance and complexity.


Nitida Wines, a family-owned boutique winery, is a standout in the region and boasts the acclaimed restaurant Tables at Nitida with its picturesque al fresco dining area perfect for celebrating special occasions with family (we have enjoyed Christmas Lunch here). Amongst a range of award-winning wines, you’ll discover the Calligraphy Sauvignon Blanc and Wild Child Méthode Cap Classique, which effortlessly showcase the best of Durbanville's terroir.


With its stunning views of Table Mountain, De Grendel offers a range of exceptional wines, including the flagship Rubaiyat red blend. The estate's restaurant, helmed by Chef Ian Bergh, serves innovative farm-to-table cuisine that perfectly complements their wines.



Stellenbosch: The Heart of Wine Country

Venturing a little further from Cape Town, wine enthusiasts will find themselves in Stellenbosch, the undisputed heart of South Africa's wine industry. This charming university town, founded in 1679, is surrounded by the picturesque Jonkershoek River Valley and is home to over 150 wineries.


Stellenbosch is renowned for its red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz. The region's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils contribute to the production of complex, full-bodied wines that have garnered international acclaim.


Among the many stellar wineries in the area, Ken Forrester Wines stands out for its exceptional Chenin Blanc. Known as "Mr. Chenin," Ken Forrester has been instrumental in elevating this varietal's status both locally and internationally. Visitors can enjoy tastings of his award-winning FMC Chenin Blanc, along with other premium wines, in a relaxed and informative setting.


For those seeking a more opulent experience, Kanonkop Estate offers a glimpse into the upper echelons of South African winemaking. This fourth generation family-owned estate specialises in red wines, with their Paul Sauer Bordeaux blend consistently receiving top ratings from wine critics worldwide. The estate's commitment to traditional winemaking methods, combined with state-of-the-art facilities, results in wines of exceptional quality and character.


For a boutique winery experience coupled with luxury accommodation, Alluvia Boutique Winery is hard to beat. Nestled in the Banhoek Valley, Alluvia offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, meticulously crafted wines and luxurious villa accommodations. Their Illusionary Red Blend is a particular standout, showcasing the potential of Stellenbosch's terroir.


When it comes to dining, Stellenbosch doesn't disappoint. Overture Restaurant at Hidden Valley Wines offers an innovative menu that changes with the seasons, while Rust en Vrede Restaurant, set in a historic 1785 cellar, provides a fine dining experience par excellence.

Franschhoek: A Culinary and Viticultural Paradise

Often referred to as South Africa's culinary capital, Franschhoek is perhaps the most beautiful wine region in the Cape. This picturesque valley, settled by French Huguenots in the late 17th century, has retained its Gallic charm and flair for gastronomy.


Franschhoek's history is deeply intertwined with its winemaking tradition. The Huguenots brought with them viticultural expertise from their homeland, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world's premier wine regions. Today, this legacy is celebrated in the Huguenot Monument and Museum, which offers visitors insight into the area's rich cultural heritage.


One of the most delightful ways to explore Franschhoek's wineries is aboard the Franschhoek Wine Tram. This hop-on hop-off tour takes visitors through rolling vineyards to some of the valley's most prestigious estates. The journey itself is a treat, with breathtaking views of the mountains and meticulously manicured vineyards at every turn.


Among the Wine Tram route stops, Haute Cabrière is a must-visit. Perched on the slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, this estate is known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The dramatic underground cellar, carved into the side of the mountain, provides a unique setting for wine tastings and cellar tours.


Rickety Bridge Winery, another gem on the Wine Tram route, offers a more intimate experience. This boutique winery produces excellent wines, including a standout Semillon. Visitors can enjoy tastings on the terrace overlooking the vineyards or indulge in a meal at the estate's Paulina's Restaurant.


For art lovers, Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate is a perfect blend of fine wine, gourmet cuisine, and world-class art. The estate's restaurant is consistently ranked among the best in South Africa, offering innovative dishes that showcase local ingredients. After a meal, visitors can stroll through the sculpture garden, where contemporary artworks are displayed against the backdrop of ancient oaks and manicured lawns.

Robertson: Off the Beaten Path

For those willing to venture further afield, the Robertson Wine Valley offers a more laid-back, authentic wine experience. Located about two hours from Cape Town, this region is known for its Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Method Cap Classique sparkling wines.


Van Loveren Family Vineyards, one of the largest family-owned wineries in South Africa, is renowned for its exceptional service and wide range of wines. Visitors can enjoy guided tastings, tranquil garden walks, and a fascinating "Creation Tour" that delves into the estate's history and winemaking philosophy.


Another standout in the Robertson region is Weltevrede Wine Estate. Known for its Chardonnay and sparkling wines, Weltevrede offers a unique "Wine Below Ground" candlelit cellar tour. This atmospheric experience takes visitors through underground tunnels lined with barrels, offering insights into the estate's winemaking history and the evolution of Chardonnay in the region. The estate's restaurant serves fabulous farm-to-table cuisine that perfectly complements their wines.


From the historic vineyards of Constantia to the culinary delights of Franschhoek, the sun-drenched slopes of Stellenbosch and Durbanville Hills to the hidden gems of Robertson, Cape Town's wine regions offer a journey through some of the world's most exciting viticultural landscapes. Each area has its own unique character, shaped by history,

terroir, and the passionate individuals dedicated to crafting exceptional wines. Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or a casual wine enthusiast, the Cape's wine regions promise an experience that will linger on your palate and in your memories long after your visit.
