Artists set for fifth anniversary of Open Studios weekend

Denny Breese need not search far to find inspiration for his art.

The golden sand and breaking waves depicted in many of his vibrant beachscape acrylics are just a stone’s throw from his home and garage studio at Catherine Hill Bay.

It’s a space Breese will share with the public this weekend as part of Lake Macquarie City Council’s Open Studios, where more than 40 local artists will open their doors to share their creativity and showcase their works.

A physiotherapist by day, Breese said natural beauty, combined with an innate desire to create new things and ideas, drove him to pursue his passion for making art.

“As a physio I have to effectively communicate a thought, concept or idea in a manner that patients can understand,” he said.

“I also need to think about what exercises or options a patient may need to consider when embarking on their rehab journey.”

“Similarly, in art we create and depict ideas, concepts, emotions and attitudes that we ourselves envision and want the viewer to experience.”

Breese said Open Studios presented an opportunity not only for visitors to see and buy locally produced artworks, but to learn that “it’s ok to venture out and try new things that are a bit risky and vulnerable”.

Council’s acting Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jane Britt said this weekend’s Open Studios included more than 40 artists across 28 studios throughout Lake Macquarie.

“This instalment marks five years since our inaugural Open Studios in November 2019 and it has been an ongoing success story in Lake Mac,” she said.

“It’s a wonderful way to recognise and celebrate the diversity of creative talent in our city. It gives the public a chance to buy art direct from the artists, and it gives our artists an opportunity to interact with the community and network with other creatives.”
