A Smash-Hit Broadway Musical | Come From Away
The critically acclaimed musical Come From Away is set to run for an extended stay at the Civic Theatre from 18 February 2023. It's the first time in 30 years that a Broadway smash hit has come to Newcastle – and we can't wait!
Based on the incredible real-life events in the wake of 9/11, Come From Away is an inspiring musical about unity and kindness in adversity. Set in Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 people from over 100 countries were redirected during this traumatic event, almost doubling the population of the remote Canadian town overnight. It is an uplifting story of hope and humanity, capturing the generosity and hospitality of the small community of Gander who invited the "come from aways" into their homes.
"Come From Away has been bringing audiences to their feet in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast since its opening in Australia in July 2019. Come From Away is Broadway's 49th longest-running musical in history, and we're delighted to bring this special production to Newcastle next year," said the show's producer, Rodney Rigby.
"Newcastle audiences will finally get to see a production that has captured the hearts of millions across Broadway, London's West End, North America, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney."
Securing this spectacular Broadway production is a significant coup for City of Newcastle. It joins a stellar line-up of international acts featured on Newcastle's 2023 major events calendar, kicking off on 10 January with one of the biggest names in music, Elton John.
Civic Theatre Manager Leonie Wallace says that hosting a Broadway production like Come From Away puts the theatre front and centre for consideration for future international theatre productions of this calibre.
"By securing this international Broadway production for Newcastle and Civic Theatre, we can demonstrate the demand for other musicals and live theatre productions on the national touring circuit," said Ms Wallace.
