Lappers will soon have the opportunity to swim at either Speers Point or Charlestown Swim Centre, with Speers Point Swim Centre opening, by appointment only, to the public from Monday 25 May. (Pictured above: Speers Point Swim Centre. Image courtesy of Lake Macquarie City Council)
Council’s Manager Leisure Services Brad Sutton said due to popular demand Council will temporarily open Speers Point Swim Centre, which is usually closed for winter.
“Speers Point Swim Centre will reopen from Monday 25 May with a similar process to Charlestown Swim Centre, where swimmers wishing to swim at the centre will need to call to pre-book a one-hour session to swim in the pool,” Mr Sutton said.
“Since Charlestown Swim Centre’s reopening on Friday 15 May almost all of our sessions have been booked out daily.
“We are currently limited due to the one person per lane restriction; however, as restrictions continue to ease and we can have more people in the pool we will reassess our services. While this level of demand continues and we are required, we will operate both Speers Point and Charlestown swim centres; however, if demand drops off we may need to review our capacity to have both facilities open to the public.
“We would like to remind the community to be patient with us when calling to book, as we receive a high volume of calls each day.”
Bookings will open for Speers Point Swim Centre from 9am, Saturday 23 May.
West Wallsend Swim Centre will also be open from Tuesday 26 May for the purposes of squad training only, in line with NSW State Government restrictions.
“We will have modified sessions available for Junior Squad (under 16s) as well as the introduction of a new squad service, STOMP Squad, which is targeted towards over 16s wanting to train for surf, triathlon, open water, masters and professional fitness,” Mr Sutton said.
“Squad sessions will also be available at Charlestown and Speers Point swim centres from Tuesday 26 May.
“New restrictions are in place at all facilities, so I’d encourage lappers and squad swimmers to familiarise themselves with our terms and conditions before booking in.”
Bookings are required for all squad sessions. Bookings for squad sessions will open on Monday and can be made by calling 4921 0782 between 9am and 5pm, seven days a week.
