Newcastle Rescue Northstars 6 DEFEAT Adelaide Adrenaline 2

The Newcastle Rescue Northstars extended their winning streak to four games following a 6-2 win against Adelaide Adrenaline in Warners Bay on Sunday.

Northstars’ head coach John Kennedy Jr said the four consecutive wins, achieved at home, over two weekends was a “great start” but the team was not about to let their foot off the pedal.

“It doesn’t get much better than where we are right now but, and we’ve talked about this in the locker room, it’s great being at the top but it’s even tougher staying there,” Kennedy said.

“We are looking forward to more challenges, looking forward to the next weekend in Adelaide.

“I expect them to come out flying in the next game. It’s going to be a hard game. I expect something completely different when we’re there on the weekend.”

Northstars local player Hamish Powell began the scoring in Sunday’s game to give Newcastle a 1-0 lead.

The Northstars built on this in the second period – which for the past two games had been a weak area for the team – with two goals, coming from local Shane Southwood and import Sammy Banga.

Adrenaline’s Steve Best netted a goal to put Adrenaline on the board – 3-1.

Three more goals from the Northstars in the third – from import Francis Drolet (2) and captain Robert Malloy – sealed the game for Newcastle. One more goal from Adelaide import Ales Kratoska, coming with 30 seconds left, made it a 6-2 final.

The Northstars have won all four of their games in the opening two rounds of the 2019 Australian Ice Hockey League season.

Sunday’s result follows a 5-3 win against Perth Thunder at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday.

The Northstars will travel to Adelaide to face Adrenaline in a double header on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12.
